Beep! Beep! We all remember the cartoon we watched growing up about the roadrunner that always outsmarted the coyote. In real life these birds can run 15mph. They can run away from danger as well as catch faster moving prey. Essentially they are predators who will chase down and eat snakes, lizards, small birds, and rodents. They run quickly through their arid scrub habitat, and are often seen crossing roads. They very seldom fly, but as seen in the picture they will fly to the top of a tree perhaps to use it as a lookout. The females lay 3 to 6 eggs. The birds song is very dove-like, getting deeper with each note. Their range is the southwestern United States extending as far north as Nevada.

In 1796 Commandante de Nava sent orders banning any foreigners from entering into Texas without extensive documentation. They mainly didnt want any anglos to enter this territory because there had been rumors of the whites wanting to take over the area. Despite these orders Phillip Nolan, a bold, adventurous, and very brave man entered the territory with 27 associates (18 americans, 7 spaniards, and 2 negro slaves) and traveled from Natchez up the Mississippi River to current Vicksburg and then turned west toward Texas.
